Commercialising research

The commercialisation of scientific research results begins when an idea is shaped into a finished product and involves bringing it to market to generate sales. To achieve this, you need to assess the potential market size, the required investment and the availability of distribution channels. If you believe your project has commercial potential and can generate a profit, you should consider one of the two available technology transfer options.

Direct commercialisation

When opting for direct commercialisation, you can sell your scientific research results, R&D outcomes or know-how or make them available to third parties under a licensing, rental or lease agreement.

Indirect commercialisation

You can also choose the indirect route by establishing a spin-off company. Founding such an entity can generate higher returns and pave the way for attracting private and institutional investors. As your commercialisation partner, Univentum Labs will support you during the spin-off formation process and throughout the subsequent stages of bringing the technology to market.

What is a spin-off?

A spin-off company is a business entity spun out from a parent institution, such as the University of Gdańsk, most commonly operating as a limited company. Its primary purpose is to facilitate commercialisation and technology transfer, which is why spin-offs are typically staffed by research teams or individual academics. As a shareholder, the role of the special purpose vehicle is to oversee the newly formed enterprises, ensure the proper commercialisation and technology transfer process and assist in connecting them with potential business partners seeking to commission research.
